Started Dogs
If you do not have a dog and would like to get a head-start on the path to having a service dog, choosing a started dog may be an excellent option.
At Medi-Dogs, we define a started dog as one who has passed or whose skills are at the point that they would pass the Readiness Test. These dogs are no longer service dog prospects, and we believe that they have a very good chance of successfully completing service dog training. As with all service dog prospects and service dogs in training, there is still a risk that a started dog may wash.
Started dogs are exactly that: started! They have a lot of high-quality professional training under their belts, but will complete their training in our owner training program after placement. See our Frequently Asked Questions for more information about started dogs vs. fully trained service dogs.

Benny
Medical Alert Service Dog Prospect
Poodle Mix
1 year old
25lbs
Benny was pulled from Shelter From the Storm in June 2025 after living in Texas. He is a great learner and has a number of skills already. Benny loves to hang out with his people, whether it's playing with toys or cuddling up for a nap. He also likes to play with other dogs and can work near them without an issue. Benny is a service dog prospect meaning he has begun his training but not yet to the "started dog" status. We are looking for an active teen or adult for placement for Benny.
